A Revisionary Account of Actualism and Possibilism

چکیده
Possibilism is the position that it is possible to make a veridical statement about something, which doesn’t exist. Based on this observation, actualism and possibilism can be defined in first-order predicate logic by means of one or more existence predicates. It is argued that an analogous distinction can be made in the realm of first-order modal logic, and that this distinction ought to be accepted in the modal case, if it is accepted in the non-modal case. Given this trivializing perspective on possibilism versus actualism, other notions of actualism and possibilism based on the validity of the Barcan Formula and its converse have to be rejected. By taking a look at examples of different sorts of possibilia, it is made plausible that possibilism is indispensable in order to deal with fictional entities and doxastic objects. The purpose of this article is to advocate one of the simplest possible distinctions between actualism and possibilism. According to this approach, the possibilist asserts that there are multiple notions of existence and objects can exist in various ways, whereas the actualist asserts that there is only one kind of existence. While this position is certainly not new, it has rarely been made explicit, perhaps because its formulation is rather trivial in first-order predicate logic. But when transferred to first-order modal logic, this view is much less

How is what an agent ought to do related to what an agent ought to prefer that she does? More precisely, suppose we know what an agent’s preference ordering ought to be over the outcomes of performing the various courses of action open to her. Can we infer from this information how she ought to act, and if so, how can we infer it? One view (which, for convenience, I will call ‘actualism’) is th...
متن کاملCounterpart Semantics for Quantified Modal Logic
In this paper we deal with the semantics for quantified modal logic, QML in short, and their philosophical relevance. In the first part we introduce Kripke semantics for the first-order modal language L= with identity, then we consider some unsatisfactory features of this account from an actualist point of view. In addition, we show that the calculus QE .K + BF on free logic, with the Barcan fo...
متن کاملA Puzzle about Truth and Singular Propositions 1 1 . Singular Propositions
My dissertation consists of three essays in the Metaphysics of Modality: In "A Puzzle about Truth and Singular Propositions," I consider two theses that seem to be true and then an argument for the conclusion that they form an inconsistent pair. One thesis is that a proposition that is singular with respect to a given object implies that the object exists. This is so because the proposition pre...
متن کاملModal Ontology and Generalized Quantifiers
Timothy Williamson has argued that in the debate on modal ontology, the familiar distinction between actualism and possibilism should be replaced by a distinction between positions he calls contingentism and necessitism. He has also argued in favor of necessitism, using results on quantified modal logic with plurally interpreted second-order quantifiers showing that necessitists can draw distin...
متن کاملThe social value of candidate HIV cures: actualism versus possibilism
A sterilising or functional cure for HIV is a serious scientific challenge but presents a viable pathway to the eradication of HIV. Such an event would be extremely valuable in terms of relieving the burden of a terrible disease; however, a coordinated commitment to implement healthcare interventions, particularly in regions that bear the brunt of the HIV epidemic, is lacking. In this paper, we...
